Problems with Surrogacy in India

If you are trying to get pregnant, then surrogacy might be the best option for you. Further, if you want to save thousands of dollars on all of the related expenses, then surrogacy in India is worth exploring. The renowned British news agency, The Guardian, reported that India’s surrogacy industry would be around 2.3 billion USD a year by the end of 2012 and foreigners traveling to India for surrogacy make up a big percentage of that overall number. If you are thinking about undergoing surrogacy in India, then you may want to know what problems could arise. Here is a list that can help you decide whether the potential problems are manageable enough for you to still go through with surrogacy in India.

There will most likely be a language barrier between you and your Indian surrogate. For some people seeking surrogacy abroad, this is a problem; however, many people who travel to India see it as a very easy barrier to overcome. Luckily, most of the medical staff around you will speak English and can act as translators between you and the surrogate.

The woman may not be eating a nutritious diet. Even if you supply your surrogate mother in India with supplements and nutrients, it may be hard to convince her to eat a healthy diet. This is primarily due to lack of education compounded by habit. Because your surrogate comes from a lower stratum of the society, access to nutritious food is sometimes a problem. If you supply her with additional food, she may give it to her own children rather than consume it herself. This problem can be addressed in many ways, one of which includes having her live in a medical hostel during the pregnancy. That way, medical professionals can oversee her diet.

You will have to travel back and forth. Getting surrogacy in India is much different than availing gastric plication in Tijuana or breast implants in Thailand. These procedures are relatively short in comparison to the time involved in the entire surrogacy process. Because the entire process will take a year or so, you will probably have to travel to India twice or thrice over its duration. This will require you to take time off work. While the travel expenses added to the medical treatment will still end up being extremely cheaper than if you go through with surrogacy in the United States or Australia, it is hard to put a price tag on your time. On the flip side, you will get to experience a new culture, and travel the world; something you may have always wanted to do.

The laws are different. In the event that anything does go wrong during your surrogacy in India, it may be harder to fight for your rights. While there is a legal system in place, finagling your way through any legality, let alone a foreign one, can be a nightmare. This of course, is very rare. However, it is something you should be aware of ahead of time.

These are a few things that could be problematic during your surrogacy in India. Do remember that hundreds of foreigners travel to India for surrogacy every year and face little difficulty. Most find it to be an enjoyable experience that ends with a new member of the family.
